This policy endeavours to instil lifelong behaviours to maintain a healthy body and mind.
Physical Education has as its focus the individual child. It strives to contribute to the physical aspects of the total development of the child in accordance with our overall education policy. This policy is so implemented that the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, moral and social objectives will be enhanced. A main focus is to provide the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes necessary for successful participation in physical activities.
Health Education promotes healthy eating and living a healthy lifestyle as outlined in the Australian Health and Physical Education curriculum.
The Daniel Morcombe Safety Curriculum is implemented across Prep to Yr 6 classes.

For us, physical education is concerned with:
promoting fitness
helping the children to develop a positive self image
providing activities for personal and social growth
providing opportunities for the children to enjoy physical activities in both competitive and non-competitive situations
allowing the children to develop a knowledge of the structure and function of their bodies and to enjoy using their bodies in vigorous physical activity
fostering self motivation stemming from the desire to improve
providing activities which promote opportunities for problem solving
Our students are provided with a wide range of opportunities for intra-school and inter-school competitions and social games. Major sports include swimming, cross-country and athletics. Each year we endeavour to organize associations to come to St Ita’s and to teach our students the skills of different sports. Some of these have included cricket. Aussie Rules, netball, ten-pin bowling, basketball, water polo and soccer.
Play Is the Way (The Game Factory) is an evaluated program of physically interactive, cooperative games that is implemented from Years 1-6. This program is a cross curricular tool that promotes social and emotional learning. The program’s objective is to help create a safe learning environment in which students train to be independent, self-managing, self-motivated learners in persistent pursuit of their personal best and able to get along with each other – to help develop students of strong character and decency with the social and emotional competencies to live and learn well.
The Get Set Go Program provides quality aquatic programs for our students. The swimming program is conducted in Terms 1 and 4 for students in Years 1-6.
Students from Years P-6 participate in the Physical Education Program facilitated by the PE Teacher and informed by the Australian Curriculum.
The St Ita's Dolphins Swim Club operates each Thursday night in the summer terms and is offered to students from Prep to Year 6.
Our students are taught the skills required for team sports and we actively promote local clubs and their sign on days so that students may join teams to practise the skills they have learnt at school. Students from Yrs 4-6 participate in interschool programs.
Outdoor Education Program
As part of the Physical Education Curriculum St Ita’s School offers an outdoor education program for students in Years 5 and 6. Students are away from home for two nights and participate in a variety of outdoor and team building activities. Information regarding the school camp program is released at the beginning of the school year. This program is an important component of the social and emotional learning for our students.
